Assessment of the Future Prospects of Cattle Farming in Vietnam

05-12-2024

News

Vietnam’s cattle farming industry holds significant growth potential in the future, driven by the increasing demand for beef and related cattle products, alongside government support policies. However, to achieve sustainable development, the sector must also address several challenges.

Although the share of production remains relatively small, the steady growth observed in recent years indicates the development potential of the beef cattle industry in Vietnam. By improving farming technology and expanding production scales, Vietnam could enhance its standing in the global market in the coming years.

Current situation of Cattle Farming

1. Cattle Population: The total cattle herd in Vietnam has experienced steady growth in recent years. By 2024, the total cattle population is estimated to reach approximately 6 million, with both beef and dairy cattle showing consistent increases.

2. Beef Production: Domestic beef production for the market is estimated to reach around 350,000 tons in 2024, showing a slight increase compared to previous years. However, production remains insufficient to meet domestic demand, and Vietnam continues to import a significant quantity of beef from other countries.

Developments Trends

1. Application of Science and Technology: Farmers and businesses are actively adopting advancements in science and technology, such as the use of high-quality crossbred cattle (Brahman, Angus, Wagyu) and advanced farming practices, including Total Mixed Ration (TMR), silage fermentation, and biological additives.

2. Organic Farming: With a growing demand for clean and safe food, many farmers are shifting towards organic cattle farming. This new trend aims to meet the increasing market demand for high-quality, safe food products.

Challenges

1. Disease Outbreaks: The cattle farming industry remains vulnerable to disease outbreaks, which directly impact the productivity and health of cattle herds.

2. Input Costs: The cost of cattle feed and other essential inputs, such as high-quality breeding cattle, remains high, which creates challenges for farmers in maintaining and expanding production.

3. Beef Imports: Despite growth in domestic beef production, Vietnam still relies on significant imports of beef from countries such as India, Australia, Canada, and the United States to meet domestic consumption needs.

Opportunities

1. Market Demand: Domestic demand for beef continues to rise, particularly in urban areas, as income levels increase and the consumption of high-protein foods becomes more widespread.

2. Export Potential: Vietnamese beef has considerable export potential, especially to Asian markets such as China, South Korea, and Japan. This presents a significant opportunity for Vietnam’s cattle farming sector to expand its market reach and contribute to economic growth.
